ABOUT THE 'MAY' SURNAME
Some people assume that our surname MAY is a shortened form of other well known Jewish names like Mayer or Mayorowitz or Mayefsky. However, we have a family mesorah (tradition) that the name "MAY" was never shortened and is a Jewish acronym that was developed from the Hebrew letters:
Mem,
Aleph
Yud
forming the word
"

These are the first letters of three Hebrew words that could either be
Mizera Aharon Yerushah - "Inherited From the Seed of Aharon"
This would seems to fit in with the Sephardi Surname Mazeh which is an acronym for "Mizera Aharon Hacohen" - "from the seed of Aharon the Cohen", although our family is not Sephardi
alternatively
Mesharet Elokei Yisrael - "Servants of The G-d of Israel"
Our family comes from Minsk Gubernya, Belarus and the family may well have been of Chassidic origin, as they originally davened Nusach Sefard (prayed from a Chassidic style prayerbook).
